Ever wondered what it’s like to cast a surface popper while parrots fly overhead and howler monkeys yell at you? I have. I’ve wanted to fish the Amazon River for years and 2012 is it! We’ve received great feedback from customers who’ve visited the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge in a remote section of the Amazon.
The Agua Boa River has recently been established as a “Fly Fishing Only” river, which to the best of my knowledge, makes it the only one in the Amazon watershed. The river isn’t famed for its 20-pound trophy peacock bass but it is known for its amazingly consistent fishing with the larger peacocks in the 10 to 16 pound range. The consistent fly fishing opportunities make this location really appealing, but for me it’s also about a chance to experience the Amazon. The photos of the jungle, animal, and bird life are what really attracted me. We’re just using fishing as a means to get there and experience one of the world’s truly amazing places.
The lodge has boats with poling platforms run by guides who specialize in sight fishing.
“From Agua Boa: Once you have fished the crystal clear-waters of the Agua Boa you will come to realize why this river has been variously described as “the most exciting, unique fishing location we have visited” and “the best fly fishing experience there is.” The clarity of the water allows sight casting to cruising peacock bass (Tucunaré) as well as the elusive aruwana as they glide across the fine sandy bottomed shallows.
Now I realize this is their advertising but from the photos I’ve seen and discussions with people who have been there the fishing is outstanding even if the water isn’t “crystal clear.” It might best be described as tannin-stained. When the water is more colored you end up fishing to structure.
I’ve not talked with anyone who hasn’t had very good fishing regardless of the conditions. The primary targeted species is the Peacock bass (Tucunaré) but there are many other species that can be caught on the fly rod. Some of them are: Aruanã, Arapaima, Piranhas, and several species of Catfish.
After looking at the calendar and talking with the extremely knowledgeable organizers at FlyWater Travel we’ve booked the week of February 25 to March 3, 2012. I’ve been receiving the lodge’s newsletter for several months and paying attention to the weekly fishing reports. As with all fishing trips everything revolves around the weather and the best you can do is pick a time that can maximize your chances. Trips run Saturday to Saturday out of Manaus, Brazil. We can offer assistance with flight schedules and accomodation arrangements (both directions.)
The trip cost is $5500US (double occupancy) from Manaus and includes:
- Private Flight Manaus to Lodge (approx. 1.5 hrs)
- Transfers in Manaus.
- All meals, including drinks (beer, wine, local liquor)
- Laundry service if required
- Free use of lodge WiFi.
- Complimentary 8 day Global Rescue coverage is available to all guests visiting the Lodge.
To find out more check out the lodge’s website.
This is a world-class facility and rated as one of the best fishing lodges in the world. But what is really important to me is that it is in the heart of the Amazon, has incredibly consistent fly fishing, and there is no shortage of amazing things to see or fish for.
Please contact the shop if you’d like additional information or to reserve a spot.
