Mexico’s Ascension Bay is home to bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook, barracuda, and a multitude of other species. We are headed back to Club Grand Slam for another week in 2017.
The trip will be a Saturday to Saturday excursion with clients needing to arrive in Cancun mid-day on their arrival date. Upon arrival in Cancun you will be transported from Cancun to Punta Allen – the small town at the “end of the road.” Club Grand Slam will be your home for 7 nights and 6 days. While there you will enjoy fishing on some of the most productive flats in the Carribbean.
You will get many chances to sightfish to bonefish in shallow waters. You don’t soon forget the sight of those tails poking out between the mangroves once you’ve experienced them. Tarpon lovers can target the silver king in nearby mangrove channels that open up into green rooms that are home to crocodiles, snook, and tarpon. Casting your line while a crocodile is in sight can make for some pretty exciting angling! Folks can also have decent shots at snook that roam the flats in search of food. And of course for anglers interested in chasing permit there is little doubt that Ascension Bay is one of the all-time-best destinations in the world. If you work at it you will get shots at permit. What happens after that …….
Boats at Club Grand Slam are well-equipped traditional style pangas that handle the open water and skinny flats. All boats are equipped with two way radios, first aid kits, life jackets, rod holders, and cushioned seats. Anglers get to enjoy the experience of a guide and an apprentice guide while at Club Grand Slam. (An extra set of eyes never hurts.)
Greg, Lupita (owners) and their staff and guides run a great operation. The lodge itself runs like a fine-tuned machine. The guides meet you each morning to help transfer your gear to the boat (which is only a couple hundred meters away.) At the end of each fishing day your rods and reels are rinsed with freshwater before you store them in your rooms’ rod racks.
Meals – courtesy of Lupita’s culinary skills – are served on the upstairs deck and are a feast for the eyes and the belly. Breakfast always includes fresh juice and coffee – sometimes with a hint of cinnamon – fruit, and either crepes, scrambled eggs, or bacon and eggs. Dinners are generally a three-course event with fresh local flavors and a hint of spice. Dinners include chili rellenos, enchiladas, grilled snapper. Be sure to leave room for dessert because cakes are Lupita’s favourite things to create. Every client who has been to Club Grand Slam talks about how much they enjoyed Lupita’s cooking.
