With the warm weather hovering around Calgary recently, many folks will be able to get out onto the river for a day, or two, or three of fishing. I was able to make it out yesterday for a few hours in the afternoon starting at about 2. When I got to the river, clarity was [...]
Fishing continues to be great on the Bow these days. Overall water clarity is very good for this time of year, with the exception of the west bank clouding up below Fish Creek. You can expect to see this change, for better or worse, over the next week with sporadic rain showers. But generally this should [...]
The big headline today was wind. With strong winds from an incoming front, it drove many folks away from the weather, but didn’t drive the fish away from feeding. There must have been something really tasty in the water column, as fish were rising quite viciously for emergers to the point where they literally were [...]
Check out Aaron’s latest video commemorating Fridays on the Bow River with Nick.
Things are looking up these days with clarity getting better and better after the last big snow. With about 2 feet of visibility the fish can see what you’re throwing at them and they aren’t being shy about it. A well-placed streamer still seems to be the way to go, with the odd one taking [...]
Hope everyone has been enjoying the warm weather while you can! As predicted the river has been clouding up and as of yesterday visibilty was very limited. That doesn’t mean the fish aren’t there, you just need to be a little more presistent on putting flies in the “right spot”. We’ll have to wait and see [...]
For those of you lucky enough to be out on the river yesterday you were in for a treat as the sunshine finally made an appearance in the afternoon. While not ideal conditions with water clarity and still a good amount of snow, its better than the blizzard conditions last week and the fish are [...]
It was great to see so many anglers on the river this weekend with the long overdue arrival of warm weather! With the exception of the cold day on Friday, days and nights have been warming up over the past few days which has made fishing more enticing. The warmer weather has meant not having [...]

One of the reasons I like this fly is because of its excellent visibility at distance which plays into the way I like to fish for northern pike. Generally white flies show extremely well against dark water or bottom, but when I tied the beacon on to the leader I was amazed at just how far and how deep I could see it. For me a lot of the fun of pike fishing is watching the fish follow the fly and you can adjust your retrieve accordingly.
